The film will show at 4 pm in Loew Auditorium. The class will provide you with a ticket.
A Man for All Seasons presents the viewer with the central question of the Reformation period:
What is your religious conviction, and how far would you go to defend it?
Drawing upon your new knowledge of late medieval piety and the history of Christian theology, discuss one aspect of a single character’s debate about his or her faith. You may focus on the question above or conceive one of your own. Examples would be:
- What motivates the character?
- Is their position understandable and consistent?
- What influences their doubt or certainty?
- Can politics be a part of religion and a motivator for theological change?
Your task is to be an informed consumer of the themes presented in the film and a critical analyst of the spiritual debates presented in the storyline.
Our goal in this exercise is to have you think critically about passion for a cause. We all feel passionately about certain issues, but it takes the rare individual who will set aside personal safety in the face of absolute power. We want you to think about the consequences of standing firmly on principle.
