Advanced Placement Courses and Exams
For students who attended secondary school in the United States, Advanced Placement courses are a very common way to study Calculus. There are two flavors, Calculus AB and Calculus BC. Roughly, Calculus AB corresponds to Dartmouth's MATH 3 (see the Math 3 syllabus for more detail) while Calculus BC covers the material in MATH 3 and the first half of MATH 8 (see the Math 8 syllabus).
Scoring well on the AB or BC exam yields credit and advanced placement.
Exam | Score | Credit | Placement |
AB (or AB subscore on the BC exam) | 4 or 5 | MATH 3 | MATH 8 |
BC | 4 or 5 | MATH 3 and MATH 8 | MATH 9 or 11 |
If you took one of these courses (or a similar one) but did not take the AP exam (or scored below a 4), you can always take our local placement exam gain additional credit. Someone with Calculus AB experience should take our MATH 3 Credit Exam while someone with BC experience should take our MATH 8 Credit Exam.
