We will be using Jupyter notebooks for all of the assignments in this class. Jupyter notebooks combine Markdown text formatting with Python code snippets and LaTeX equations. To use Jupyter notebooks, we will be using the Anaconda Python distribution.

Installation Instructions

Download the Anaconda distribution for your OS here. Download the individual version. Run the installer.
Once downloaded and installed, launch the Anaconda Navigator graphical interface. You should see Jupyter Notebook as one of the pre-installed applications.
Clicking to launch Jupyter should open a browser window that loads the Jupyter homepage. On the homepage, you should see your User folder.
- Alternatively, you can launch Jupyter by running the command jupyter notebook from the terminal/command line. This will launch the Jupyter application with your current working directory as the root.
To confirm that Jupyter is working, navigate to SA1 in the file structure and open the sa1.ipynb file.
Each "cell" of the Jupyter notebook can be edited by double-clicking. For Markdown or Latex cells, this will reveal the source text. For Python code cells, this will allow you to edit and run the code. Use shift+enter to run the cell and process its contents.
If everything has been installed correctly, the Jupyter notebook should load up and each cell should be runnable with no errors (excluding the TODO code cells).

Changing the Jupyter Browser/Homepage (Optional)

Jupyter will automatically open on the default browser of your device (Safari or IE). If you prefer to use a different browser, follow the instructions below.

Using the Anaconda navigator, open Terminal or Command Prompt with Anaconda active.
Navigate to the .jupyter folder by typing: cd .jupyter
Generate a .jupyter configurations file by typing: jupyter notebook --generate config
Open the jupyter_notebook_config.py file with any editor.
Navigate to the c.NotebookApp.browser option.
Uncomment the [c.NotebookApp.browser = '/'] line, and replace the / with the file path to your desired browser, and add %s at the end. Below is (probably) where Chrome would be on Windows, but double-check for your own device.
Save the file, and then, next time you open Jupyter, it should use the browser you set.
Similarly, if you'd like to open automatically to your CS70 folder rather than the User folder, navigate to the c.NotebookApp.default_url option in the config file, and add your file path to the end of the default '/tree'. No %s needed for this one.
